Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Overview

Gynacomastia is a common condition that affects almost 40% of men. In most cases, gynacomastia is due to fat deposits in the chest under the breasts. However, the condition occasionally occurs when the male breast glands become enlarged.

Enlarged male breasts can be embarrassing and devastating to your self-confidence. Many men with enlarged breasts feel restricted in the clothing they are able to wear and never bare their chest at the beach. Fortunately, large male breasts can be permanently and safely removed through breast reduction surgery at our Melbourne Day Surgery.

Your Surgery

Your male breast reduction is performed as a Day Case at our fully equipped Day Surgery Centre. The procedure takes less than an hour and our patients can return home by the afternoon.

Our day surgery system provides extensive support during your recovery period. You will be seen on the morning after your surgery and then regularly during the recovery period. Approximately 90 per cent of our male breast reduction patients return to normal activity within three days.

Our Approach to Male Breast Reduction

At Avenue Plastic Surgery, we specialise in a minimally invasive approach to male breast reduction. Your surgeon may recommend:

  • Liposuction
If your gynecomastia is primarily caused by fatty tissue, your surgeon may recommend liposuction. Liposuction removes excess fat from the breast area to create a sculpted male chest. This minimally invasive technique substantially reduces scarring and provides easy and rapid recovery.
  • Surgical Incision
If your gynacomastia is the result of firm glandular tissue, your surgeon may recommend a small incision to remove excess glandular tissue and fat from the breast. The incision is made at the base of the areola of the nipple to minimise visible scarring. Excision may be performed in conjunction with liposuction to create an even flatter chest.
