FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) About Plastic Surgery and Other Cosmetic Treatments

Plastic surgery refers to surgery performed in order to alter appearance and function. If you are feeling self-conscious about a particular aspect of your appearance, plastic surgery may be of assistance. By refining the way you look, plastic surgery can help to improve your self esteem and body image. The aim of plastic surgery is to produce a natural appearance so that you can move on to enjoy your life with full confidence.

Why Plastic Surgery?

The word "plastic" comes from the Greek "plasticise" which means to mould. Plastic Surgery enables us to mould or reform the human body. Plastic Surgery encompasses both reconstructive surgery and aesthetic surgery, popularly referred to as cosmetic surgery.

Reconstructive surgery restores or improves physical function and minimizes disfigurement from accidents, disease or birth defects. Aesthetic surgery aims to make a significant improvement to the quality of life by improving the appearance of normal body features and enhancing a person's self-image. Most candidates for aesthetic surgery are not "vain" but rather just want to look normal. They usually feel that there is a specific area which "stands out" at least in their own mind. Most have been self-conscious for many years and have a strong personal desire to look "normal". This personal desire may be influenced to some degree by the individual's role in society.

Because our culture is youth orientated, people seek ways to counter the effects of ageing on their appearance. Many elect surgery to look as young as they feel, to build confidence after a lifestyle change or to maintain a "competitive" edge. Aesthetic surgery therefore is all about improving self-confidence by improving a feature on a person's face or body.

The Advantages of Day Surgery

Day surgery is becoming increasingly popular amongst patients and surgeons in every specialty. We at Avenue Day Surgery are proud to have been pioneers in the specialized craft of day surgery. Day surgery is a different "system" of surgery and is not suited to every patient, to every procedure, or to every surgeon. In addition, some patients with private health insurance, may prefer to spend a few days convalescing in hospital following their surgery - especially if they have traveled from interstate or if they need a rest from a young family at home. We are happy to cater to this need and have special arrangements, with a number of excellent private hospitals situated nearby.

After many years of experience, the following are recognized as some of the advantages of day surgery:

  1. Avoiding hospitalization usually means that medications are reduced and thus the risk of side effects such as vomiting are much less. There is also far less risk of contracting certain hospital based infections caused by bacteria, which are often resistant to antibiotic treatment.
  2. Anxiety is greatly reduced as patients are met by familiar staff who have a genuine concern for their well-being. The surroundings are also familiar and the complicated regime of being admitted to a hospital is avoided.
  3. Privacy is preserved as contact with other patients is minimal and admission and discharge procedures are streamlined.
  4. Recovery occurs rapidly and self sufficiency is regained early as patients convalesce at home in familiar surroundings.
  5. Costs associated with hospitalization are substantially reduced.

How do I choose a surgeon?

Modern plastic surgery can be most effective in refining your physical features and improving your looks and outlook on life. However not all doctors who perform plastic surgery are qualified plastic surgeons. Some "cosmetic surgeons" have just taken brief courses to learn certain procedures.

Mr Allan Kalus is qualified as a specialist in plastic surgery.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and has served as Honorary Secretary of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He has had more than 20 years experience in all forms of plastic surgery and has a record of accomplishment in his field and a commitment to the highest ethical standards.

Mr Kalus has excellent technical and manual skills. He is an accomplished pianist and has qualified as an instrument rated pilot. You will find him sensitive to your requirements and will treat you as he himself would expect to be treated. Mr Kalus is married with three daughters.

How long is the recovery?

We have been in the forefront in the development of rapid recovery techniques over the last 10 years. Currently, 90 percent of our patients are able to return to full normal activity in less than three days. This means that they are able to do light housework, drive a car and, in some situations, return to work.

The most advanced surgical techniques are used in order to minimize your risk of complications and to give you the best possible result. In addition, the most advanced anesthetic techniques are used to minimize post-operative discomfort and to make recovery easier and as rapid as possible.

What about complications?

Although complications are rare, plastic surgery is real surgery and therefore, as with other forms of surgery, complications may occur. The most common cause of dissatisfaction following surgery is not achieving the desired or expected result. Although a skilled surgeon will always aim for the best possible result, individual variations in healing result in an optimal result not always being obtained. In addition, abnormalities in wound healing may occur resulting in scars that are more prominent than usual.

Complications such as bleeding, infection, delayed healing, numbness, blood clotting problems, and asymmetry may also occur. If you have any specific concerns about the possibility of these or other complications be sure to discuss these with your surgeon and anesthetist. You will then be provided with all the information you require so that you can make an informed decision.

An experienced surgeon can reduce, but not entirely eliminate, the risk of complications. Importantly, an experienced surgeon knows how to avoid complications and will be able to recommend appropriate treatment should they occur. Day surgery has been shown to have a lower incidence of complications with a far shorter recovery time than surgery involving overnight hospital stay.

Where is the surgery performed?

Avenue Day Surgery is our own state of the art, fully equipped, registered Day Procedure Centre. This means that it is registered by the Health Department Victoria for the performance of surgery under general anesthesia. Surprisingly, not all operating theatres are registered. This means that the required standards have not been met and you therefore have no assurance as to the suitability of the design, staffing, sterilization and resuscitation procedures.

Avenue Day Surgery is accredited by the Australian Council on Health Care Standards. This is the highest award available to an Australian hospital and indicates a commitment to quality assurance, patient satisfaction, and international best practice. This is your assurance of the very highest standards of care.
