Lips are a most important part of our expression and appearance. Many women become self-conscious about their lack of lip prominence. Although one's lips are usually quite full as a child, lips tend to become thinner and lengthen with age. The amount of vermilion show (the red part of the lip) tends to diminish. Several techniques are available to enhance lip fullness such as tissue fillers and injections. Currently autologous fat injection (which refers to the transplant of patient's own fat by injection into their lips) is usually the most appropriate way to produce permanent correction. Fat injection is done under local anesthetic, and patients should expect the lips to be swollen for a few days.
A synthetic collagen preparation is also available for those that require only a slight or moderate lip enhancement. This is performed under local anaesthetic, takes only a few minutes and produces a result that lasts for several months.
