In Australia, anyone with a medical degree is entitled to perform “cosmetic” surgery. Some ‘cosmetic surgeons’ are really GP’s who have only taken brief courses to learn certain procedures.

Our view is that “cosmetic” surgery is real surgery and is definitely associated with risk. It should therefore only be performed by doctors who at the very least, have a senior qualification in surgery! Cosmetic surgery should also only be performed in an accredited hospital with a high standard of surgical and anaesthetic care.

At Avenue Aesthetic Surgery we have surgeons who are members of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and have undertaken the further training necessary to qualify as a Plastic Surgeon. This training involves an additional 8 years of practical instruction (on top of a medical degree) to master the specialist skills required to perform plastic surgical procedures.

We also endorse surgeons who have qualified in the USA and the UK.

Dr. Allan Kalus is an experienced Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and has extensive experience in the subspecialty of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

In addition to being a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr. Kalus is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and has served as Honorary Secretary of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

With over 30 years’ experience, Dr. Kalus has outstanding technical skills and is committed to the highest ethical standards.

Dr. Kalus is married with 3 daughters and 2 young grandsons. His wife, Susan, was born in London and studied History at Bedford College, University of London. Their eldest daughter, Sarah, is a Consultant Radiologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. She is married to Dr. Iwan Bennett who is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Their middle daughter, Michelle (also recently married), has a Masters of Teaching and is a Primary School Teacher. Together with her best friend from school, Ali Berg, she started Books On The Rail in Melbourne and this led to their first novel being published – “The Book Ninja.” This has proved to be an international bestseller. It has been translated into several languages and the film rights have recently been sold. Their second book “While You Were Reading” has recently been published. Their youngest daughter, Alicia, is a Senior Economist at the Department of Treasury and Finance, Victoria.

Apart from surgery, Dr. Kalus has pursued many interests.  He is an accomplished jazz pianist whose teacher and mentor was the late Dr. Allan Zavod. He has trained as a pilot and has held a multi-engine instrument rating with over 1000 hours flight time. He enjoys swimming, walking and tennis and is an avid reader currently reading books on early Australian maritime explorers and military history.

Dr. Angie Taras is a highly skilled aesthetic surgeon who has worked extensively in the USA and Australia. Dr. Taras is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

Born and raised in the Midwestern United States, Dr. Taras began her journey to medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She discovered a keen interest in surgery during her third year of medical school and went on to enter the highly competitive general surgery training program at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York City. She continued her general surgery training at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.

Dr. Taras pursued additional specialised training in Seattle in an American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) certified aesthetic surgery fellowship program. With her training complete, she started a comprehensive aesthetic surgery practice in Chicago specialising in breast and body rejuvenation. She has since relocated to Melbourne to marry and raise a family.

As a key member of the Avenue Aesthetic Surgery team, Dr. Taras is one of few female surgeons in Melbourne practising aesthetic surgery. This, together with her international experience and extensive training, gives Dr. Taras a unique perspective on her craft. She is a charming and approachable surgeon who inspires confidence in her patients and is passionate about changing people’s lives.

Dr. Taras specialises in breast procedures, including breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift and breast reconstruction. Having trained with Dr. Allan Kalus at Avenue Aesthetic Surgery, she is also an expert in all-natural breast augmentation using a patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer). Her additional areas of specialty include tummy tuck, arm lift and liposuction procedures for the body.

Outside of work, Dr. Taras loves travelling, reading, watching movies, playing tennis, going to the beach and spending time with her husband and 2 young children.
