What you need to know about Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a Tummy Tuck, involves the removal of excess skin and fat (including stretch marks) as well as the tightening of the abdominal skin. It is also used to tighten abdominal muscles that have weakened or stretched over time or as a result of pregnancy. Through abdominoplasty, our patients can achieve a smaller waistline and a tighter, flatter stomach.

OUR APPROACH TO YOUR ABDOMINOPLASTY

Abdominoplasty can also be combined with liposuction to remove excess fat from your hips and abdomen, depending on your needs. Any excess fat from your tummy can also be harvested and grafted into your breasts using a technique known as fat transfer to give you an increase in size.

Recovery typically involves wearing a compression garment over the abdomen for 6 weeks. We recommend no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for approximately 6 weeks following surgery. Most of our patients return to relatively normal activity and sedentary work after 1 week.

All surgery carries risks which are important to understand so that you make a well-informed decision. Complications associated with an abdominoplasty include bleeding, infection, seroma formation (accumulation of fluid under the skin), poor scarring, wound breakdown, skin necrosis, skin irregularities, asymmetry, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) and anesthetic complications.

This listing is not all-inclusive and patients may be at risk for additional complications depending on their past medical and surgical history. A thorough discussion will occur during consultation with your surgeon including ways to mitigate risks prior to surgery and steps taken to treat complications should they occur.

We perform the following types of Abdominoplasty Surgery:

Radical Abdominoplasty

This is our most common form of abdominoplasty as it tightens the skin on both the upper and lower parts of the abdomen. The procedure involves the removal of loose skin and excess fat from the umbilicus (belly button) to the bikini line. The underlying muscles are tightened. Our full abdominoplasty can achieve significant tightness of the skin of the abdomen; however, there is an incision that runs across the bikini line.

Subumbilical Abdominoplasty

Allows loose skin below the umbilicus (belly button) to be removed usually with a shorter incision at the bikini line. Short-scar abdominoplasty results in less scarring but does not address any loose skin above the belly button.

Abdominoplasty with Liposuction

Our tummy tuck procedures can be combined with liposuction to remove excess fat from your waist, abdomen and hips for a more contoured result.
