What you need to know about Breast Implants

Specialising in breast implants Melbourne wide for over 30 years, Avenue Plastic Surgery is here to help you make the right choice about your breast augmentation surgery. We understand the decision to undergo breast augmentation can be filled with apprehension and concern, so we do everything we can to make the process as comfortable as possible for you. The decision to undergo breast implants surgery is filled with questions: What size? What style? What shape? What position? What incision? What’s to be expected with my breast implants after my operation? Can textured implants cause cancer?

It’s important to us that you receive the answers you need for all of these questions, so we guide you through the entire decision process to ensure you achieve the most satisfying result. To ensure maximum comfort and safety, we also take great care with your breast implants before and after the surgery. Our surgeons have extensive experience, having performed over 5,000 breast enlargement operations at Avenue Plastic Surgery. Our surgeons go beyond just changing the shape or size of your bust. Their aim is to increase your confidence and self-esteem. As each surgery varies, we can discuss the cost of your procedure during your first consultation.

Your Breast Implants Surgery

We pride ourselves on performing the highest quality breast surgery Melbourne has to offer. We provide the highest level of safety and care before, during and after your enlargement procedure. We begin with a discussion of your options, offering numerous before and after images to aid your decision. Your surgery will be performed as a Day Case at one of Melbourne’s finest day surgery centres – the adjacent, fully equipped Windsor Private Hospital. Our patients normally return home by the afternoon. However, if you require or prefer an overnight stay, this is also available. You will be seen the following morning by our dedicated and experienced surgical nurse and then regularly throughout your recovery. 90% of our patients return to relatively normal activity within three days of visiting our Melbourne day surgery centre and to sedentary work after one week. Ultimately our aim is to provide you with the utmost in expert advice and care for your breast implants.

Breast Implant Size

This can be a dilemma for most women. You want the increase in breast size to be significant and worthwhile, but at the same time, not too large. We are more than happy to help you through this decision. Our breast augmentation specialists can help you choose the perfect size. To aid you in your decision making, we’ll show you a range of images from different operations. It’s an important process and we dedicate the necessary time in guiding you to ensure that you feel comfortable. Speak with Avenue Plastic Surgery today to discuss how our natural looking breast implants could improve your confidence and your life. Some say silicone implants are softer than saline implants but this is not actually true. The softness of your breast after an implant has been inserted will depend on whether the implant has been inserted in front of or behind the pectoral muscle, as well as the thickness of the capsule formed around the implant, the degree of “fill” of the implant, the mobility of the implant, and the thickness of your own breast tissue.

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants

Our surgeons have extensive experience using both saline and silicone breast implants. Although both types of implants are available for use in Australia, there is no doubt saline implants are safer. Should saline implants leak, the salt water solution is absorbed by your body. When silicone implants leak, the silicone stays in the body and can form lumps in the lymph nodes and other tissues. Migration of silicone from a ruptured silicone implant is especially common when the implant has been placed behind the pectoral muscle. Unfortunately, even the silicone in new high cohesive gel implants liquefies at body temperature and MRI studies show that 40% of high cohesive gel silicone implants leak after just 8 years. Even when silicone implants do not leak, they can be associated with general ill health – a condition known as Breast Implant Associated Illness.

When expertly performed, saline implants will feel as soft, if not softer, than silicone implants and Avenue Plastic Surgery are professionally recognised as Australia’s leaders and the most experienced in the use of saline breast implants. For detailed information to guide your choice in breast implant type, please read our open letter to patients, written by Avenue Plastic Surgery’s Mr. Allan Kalus to help you through your decision process.

As Mr Kalus himself has written, “When you consider that most saline implants last well over 20 years… that you have complete peace of mind, never having to worry about whether or not your implant is leaking… then the case for having saline implants is compelling.”

Breast Implant Shape

Breast implants can be either teardrop-shaped or round. Teardrop-shaped breast implants are designed to follow the natural profile of the breast and some women feel they achieve the most natural-looking result. However, implants can shift within the breast, and when a teardrop-shaped implant shifts, it can distort the shape of the breast. Round breast implants do not have a definitive top or bottom and so they can shift freely without changing the shape of the breast. When these implants are placed under the pectoral muscle, the muscle presses on the upper part of the implant, creating a natural teardrop shape.

No two breast augmentation procedures are the same. An outstanding outcome depends on a careful and comprehensive evaluation of your personal needs followed by skilful surgery. At Avenue Plastic Surgery, we are committed to breast augmentation surgery with peace of mind.

What to Consider
  • Your personal preferences.
  • Your existing amount of breast tissue.
  • Your enhanced bust line should complement the contour of your hips and should remain proportionate to your dimensions.
  • The cost of your breast implants – as each surgery is specific to each patient, we can discuss the costs during your first consultation.

The Incision

Planning the site of your incision is an important aspect of breast implant surgery. The most common site for the incision is just above the fold, under the breast. This incision gives excellent access to create a pocket behind the pectoral muscle. The scar is usually only 3-4 cm long and usually heals so well as to be barely visible. An alternative is to make the incision in the armpit. This approach avoids a scar on the breasts altogether. As the armpit is a long way from the bottom of the breast, special instruments are required in order to create a pocket in a suitable position for a breast implant.
