Your Breast Implants Surgery

Your surgery will be performed as a Day Case at one of Melbourne’s finest day surgery centres – the adjacent, fully equipped Windsor Private Hospital. Our patients normally return home by the afternoon. However, if you require or prefer an overnight stay, this is also available. You will be seen the following morning by our dedicated and experienced surgical nurse and then regularly throughout your recovery. 90% of our patients return to relatively normal activity within three days of visiting our Melbourne day surgery centre and to sedentary work after one week. Some say silicone implants are softer than saline implants but this is not actually true. The softness of your breast after an implant has been inserted will depend on whether the implant has been inserted in front of or behind the pectoral muscle, as well as the thickness of the capsule formed around the implant, the degree of “fill” of the implant, the mobility of the implant, and the thickness of your own breast tissue.

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants

Our surgeons have extensive experience using both saline and silicone breast implants. Although both types of implants are available for use in Australia, there is no doubt saline implants are safer. Should saline implants leak, the salt water solution is absorbed by your body. When silicone implants leak, the silicone stays in the body and can form lumps in the lymph nodes and other tissues. Migration of silicone from a ruptured silicone implant is especially common when the implant has been placed behind the pectoral muscle. Unfortunately, even the silicone in new high cohesive gel implants liquefies at body temperature and MRI studies show that 40% of high cohesive gel silicone implants leak after just 8 years. Even when silicone implants do not leak, they can be associated with general ill health – a condition known as Breast Implant Associated Illness.

Breast Implant Shape

Breast implants can be either teardrop-shaped or round. Teardrop-shaped breast implants are designed to follow the natural profile of the breast and some women feel they achieve the most natural-looking result. However, implants can shift within the breast, and when a teardrop-shaped implant shifts, it can distort the shape of the breast. Round breast implants do not have a definitive top or bottom and so they can shift freely without changing the shape of the breast. When these implants are placed under the pectoral muscle, the muscle presses on the upper part of the implant, creating a natural teardrop shape.

The Incision

Planning the site of your incision is an important aspect of breast implant surgery. The most common site for the incision is just above the fold, under the breast. This incision gives excellent access to create a pocket behind the pectoral muscle. The scar is usually only 3-4 cm long and usually heals so well as to be barely visible. An alternative is to make the incision in the armpit. This approach avoids a scar on the breasts altogether. As the armpit is a long way from the bottom of the breast, special instruments are required in order to create a pocket in a suitable position for a breast implant.
