What you need to know about Breast Implant Revision

With so many thousands of breast implants having been inserted over the years, it is becoming very common for women to develop problems requiring further surgery. If you are in this situation then it is important that you have a consultation with an experienced surgeon so that an appropriate treatment plan can be developed. Skilled surgical technique and attention to individual needs are essential to produce satisfying results with breast implants. However, all too often these are overlooked. As a result, we see many patients who have had a breast augmentation elsewhere and who are dissatisfied with the result or have developed complications.

Our Breast Implant Revision Process

We will guide you through the entire process – from initial consultation to full recovery – to help ensure you achieve the most satisfying result. We invite you to talk to our surgeons, Dr Allan Kalus and Dr Angie Taras, about your situation and to determine the best course of action.

Recovery will depend on the specific procedure being performed for revision but typically involves wearing a postoperative bra for 3 months and a ‘bra band’ over the top of the breasts for 6 weeks. We recommend no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for approximately 6 weeks following surgery. Most of our patients return to relatively normal activity and sedentary work after 1 week.

All surgery carries risks which are important to understand so that you make a well-informed decision. Complications associated with breast implant revision include bleeding, infection, capsular contracture (thickening of the scar tissue around the implant), alterations in nipple sensation, malposition of the implants, implant rupture, asymmetry, poor scarring, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) and anesthetic complications.

This listing is not all-inclusive and patients may be at risk for additional complications depending on their past medical and surgical history. A thorough discussion will occur during consultation with your surgeon including ways to mitigate risks prior to surgery and steps taken to treat complications should they occur.

Reasons for breast implant revision include:
  • Dissatisfaction with implant size or shape
  • Incorrect surgical placement or implant positioning
  • Problems with the implant e.g. hardening, leakage or rupture
  • Complications e.g. capsular contracture or infection

Implant Revision Surgery

Breast implant revision surgery is more complicated than the initial insertion surgery and needs to be performed by an experienced surgeon. No two breast implant revision surgeries are the same. An outstanding outcome depends on a careful and comprehensive evaluation of your personal needs followed by skillful surgery. Your surgeon may recommend:

  • Different implant size or shape to better complement your figure
  • Different implant type.
  • Different implant positioning to create a more natural result
  • Breast lift to correct sagging
  • Implant removal and fat transfer. Breast augmentation using your own fat is the latest innovation in breast surgery at Avenue Aesthetic Surgery. It is ideal for patients who would prefer to remove their old implants but still desire an increase in size and fullness.
