What is Gynaecomastia or “Male Breast Reduction”?

Gynaecomastia or “Male Breast Reduction”

Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a 36% increase in the number of men seeking breast reductions since the year 2000.

Sometimes the fullness in the breast area in a man is due to excess fatty tissue. But it can also occur due to growth of the breast gland which comes about after the use of anabolic steroids.

Men seeking treatment for their gynaecomastia (or manboobs) do so because they have become very self-conscious.  It affects their life in many ways and indeed sometimes a man’s whole life can be controlled by his anxiety about the appearance of his chest. Men with gynaecomastia feels that they can’t take off their shirt and they think that everyone’s looking at them.

Fortunately gynaecomastia can be easily treated in most cases. A little liposuction may be all that is required to reduce the fatty tissue.  Sometimes, the breast gland needs to be removed and that is done through a small incision at the base of the areola.

The aim of gynaecomastia surgery is always to make the man more confident so that he is no longer embarrassed to take his shirt off at the beach!
