Each week we receive many enquiries from women who are worried about their risk of developing ALCL (Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma).  In fact, there are tens of thousands of women in Australia who have had implants with a textured surface and who are, therefore, theoretically at risk of ALCL.

To date, there have been 73 cases of ALCL reported in Australia and New Zealand and this number is likely to grow with time.  So what should you do if you have a textured breast implant?

  • If you have not had any symptoms (especially swelling), then stop worrying because your risk of developing  ALCL (Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma) is very low (1 in 2,800) compared to a woman’s risk of breast cancer (which is 1 in 8).
  • Imaging by ultrasound or an MRI will provide useful information not only about your implants, but also about your own breast tissue.
  • If you would like to have your implants removed, this is a relatively straightforward procedure and can be done at any time, according to your wishes. Because silicone implants deteriorate over time, it is recommended by some surgeons that they be replaced every 10 years.
  • Once your implants are removed, restoring the shape and volume of your breasts is best done either by transferring your own fat into your breasts, a breast lift or a combination of the above.
  • The availability of Autologous Fat Transfer, in which some of your own fat taken from the abdomen, hips or thighs is grafted directly into your breasts, greatly improves your reconstructive options should you decide to have your implants removed.
  • On some occasions, women require or desire a breast implant and, in these circumstances, we recommend a smooth-walled (saline or silicone) implant placed under the muscle.
  • Our surgeons are all highly experienced in the above and would be happy to develop a personalised treatment plan, not only to maximise the aesthetic qualities of your breasts but also to give you peace of mind.

Please do not hesitate to call Avenue Aesthetic Surgery on 03 9521 1777 if you have any further questions or would like to organise a consultation appointment.

We are only too pleased to be of assistance and look forward to hearing from you.
