Jury Still Out On Silicone Breast Implant Safety

For many years, we at Avenue Aesthetic Surgery have emphasised the importance of women considering breast implants to consider carefully their options as to whether they have silicone or saline implants. Today a third option exists – breast augmentation using your own fat.

A report in the Annals of Internal Medicine has still been inconclusive in determining the long-term risk of silicone breast implants. The report reviewed 32 clinical studies and although there was no clear evidence linking silicone breast implants to cancer, connective disease, multiple sclerosis or other health conditions, a few studies did find an association between silicone implants & certain diseases including rheumatoid arthritis & Sjogren’s syndrome.

Many rheumatologists believe that any woman with an autoimmune disorder should not have silicone breast implants. Textured silicone breast implants are definitely associated with a rare cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma or ALCL.
