Having plastic surgery is a big step. If you have made the decision to undergo surgery, and it’s your first time, it is completely natural to feel anxious and uncertain about what to expect. For most patients, a large reason for concern or worry surrounds the recovery process – what the recovery will be like, how you will feel, and how long before you’ll feel up to your usual routine.

At Avenue Aesthetic Surgery we are committed to your peace of mind. From your first contact through to your final recovery, you will have our full support. We want your full journey with us to be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Let’s explore the recovery process and take a look at what you can expect.

What to expect after plastic surgery

In the days after plastic surgery, as with any surgical procedure, you may feel some pain or discomfort combined with a lack of energy. It’s normal to feel tenderness and sensitivity – you have, after all, just had surgery, so it’s key to treat yourself to some time to relax and recover. You’ll likely want to take things easy, lying in bed or on the couch for the first few days following a major procedure.

You will also likely experience some bruising and swelling. While this can be uncomfortable, it is all a part of the body’s natural healing process. It’s a good idea to bear this in mind when recovering from surgery – particularly as you evaluate the results. Don’t panic! Swelling can impact the appearance of results for a few weeks following your procedure. If you have any concerns or questions, we are always here to assist and will carefully assess your recovery as it progresses. The level of swelling and bruising you experience will differ depending on the procedure and the patient, but most patients find that this goes down and subsides in roughly the first two weeks following the operation.

At Avenue Aesthetic Surgery the majority of our patients are cared for using our own system of closely monitored Day Surgery. We favour this option, as it allows you to return home to recover in the comfort of your own space, with the support of your loved ones. Throughout this time, you will be able to contact us for anything that you may need, and you will have a dedicated surgical nurse available to ensure you receive as much care or assistance as you would like.

If you would prefer to stay overnight following surgery, you are more than welcome to do so! Our convenient location next to Windsor Private Hospital means that we can offer our patients the option of an overnight stay in the comfortable luxury of a private hospital suite, under the constant care of your dedicated surgical nurse.

How you can help your recovery process

As with any surgery, the best way to ensure a speedy recovery and an optimal result is to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle in the lead up to the procedure! A healthy body is a body best able to heal and regenerate quickly – and has the best chance of avoiding complications of surgery. Effectively, patients should make it their goal to go into the surgery in the healthiest state they can, to give their body optimum strength!

Following surgery, some of the best advice we can give patients is to take things easy! Give yourself the break your body needs to recover. If you have a busy life and are caring for young children, you may wish to make arrangements to ensure you are not having to run around behind little ones in the days that follow surgery! Listen to your body, and find the happy medium between rest and relaxation and the slow introduction of light physical activity.

Scar Management and post-operative care

Here at APS, we have a thorough post-operative care plan to follow your surgery. This involves a dedicated dressings nurse who will assist you to ensure minimal scarring and clean healing of your incision area. We also offer all our patients  complimentary Healite II LED Light Therapy treatments at our partner clinic Avenue Advanced Skin Care, so that we can ensure rapid healing and reduce scarring. It is always our priority that patients have a positive experience with us, right through the recovery process, so we are always here for anything you should require.
