Risks of surgery abroad on the rise

The sun, poolside recovery and cheaper cost make overseas cosmetic surgery an attractive option. But is it worth the risk?

The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is strongly advising all Australians to reconsider travelling overseas for cosmetic surgery with a survey showing that the number of Australians returning home with complications is increasing.

• 16.5% of patients who undergo cosmetic surgery overseas experience surgical complications
• 8.7% of patients require treatment once back in Australia
• Breast surgery patient most often require corrective treatment (representing 68% of all revision procedures), followed by facial surgery patients (15%) and then abdominal surgery patients (8%)

When considering plastic surgery, whether in Australia or abroad, ask about your surgeon’s qualitifications and experience. Remember your safety is the priority.
